Posing is one of the most common sources of anxiety for clients—but with the right approach, it becomes natural. Here’s how you can pose confidently and how photographers can coach their subjects better.
1. Relax the Hands
Tension in the hands is very visible. Shake out your fingers, rest hands gently, or interact with an item (jacket, hair, etc.).
2. Posture is Everything
Stand tall, roll your shoulders back, and lead with the chest—not the stomach. Avoid locking your knees.
3. Chin Forward, Not Up
To avoid a double chin, push your chin slightly forward and down. Photographers can coach angles for each individual.
4. Prompt-Based Posing
Instead of rigid directions, use prompts like “walk toward me like you just got good news” or “look away and then back with a smile.”
5. Vary Poses for Personality
Let your natural quirks show—crossed arms, hands in pockets, leaning against a wall. These add variety and authenticity.
6. Mirror Practice
Try a few poses in front of a mirror before your session to learn what feels natural.
